How To Throw A Disco Party

What you need:

A disco ball.

BIG hair. Think back to what you know about history. Is there a period that you can think of where the popular hair style was "bigger" (size-wise) than the 70s? Of course not. Big hair defined the 70s, so if you're planning to throw a disco party, and really want to capture the essence of the 70s, make "big hair" mandatory for entrance (ok, maybe that's a little extreme, but you catch my drift)!

FASHION

Women: The blow drier was invented in the 70s, so the fluffy wind-blown style was in. Think Farrah Fawcett in "Charlies Angels." Also known as the "Feathered Look"

Men: Afros (also known as "the natural look"), pompadors, as well as the feathered look (please see above).

Lighted Dance Floor: Imagine a few things with me for a second: John Travolta, the BeeGees, and "Saturday Night Fever". Now imagine those things without a lighted dance floor. Can't do it, can you? No disco party will be complete without a lighted dance floor. It's just how it is.

Clothes: You want that quintessential 70s look? Then dust of those bell bottoms and trouser suits and get to boogying!

Platform Shoes: You've got to have them. Men, you can wear these too!

Accessories: Hats, oversized glasses, big jewelry, large handbags

Music: Nobody who was there during the illustrious 70s will deny that, more than anything else, it was the music that was foundation of that era. Think Donna Summers "Last Dance". Think BeeGess "Love You Inside Out", A Taste of Honey "Boogie Oogie Oogie, and Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", just to name a few songs of the absolutely amazing disco era.

Disco Dance Must-Have Skills

Have a disco dance contest, or have a disco dance ice breaker. You're going to have to look up some these dances to learn the steps:

  • The California Hustle.
  • The Night Fever Line Hustle
  • The Latin Hustle
  • The Spanish Hustle
  • The Tango Hustle
  • And of course, the most popular of them all, the Swing Hustle, a roller-skating style which originated in Venice and Malibu.
